Items

Items are the shared records behind products and materials. The live app separates the entry points into Products and Materials, but downstream inventory, purchasing, manufacturing, and sales workflows all resolve back to item records.

Item type is a creation-time decision. The item card can change the family stocking unit: it asks how many of the new unit make one of the old (worked out for you when the units share a measure), then converts stock on hand, unit cost, safety stock and every recipe that uses the item, and keeps the old unit as the purchase and sales unit so prices keep their meaning. Open sales, purchase and manufacturing orders and draft stocktakes must be closed first. Ledger entries before the change stay in the old unit. A sellable family can also carry a different sales unit without changing how inventory is held.
